Trump’s Illegal Strike on Iran Is a Constitutional Crisis

Mike’s Views are not (necessarily) PDA’s official positions

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is outraged by Trump’s reckless fascist actions. We condemn Trump’s unconstitutional bombing of Iran. We support the Khanna/Massie War Powers Resolution. We demand that Trump and Vance resign. PDA is organizing with our allies inside and outside of Congress to push back against Trump’s illegal aggression. We know that all across the political spectrum most Americans oppose squandering our resources to kill innocents in other nations.

We’re mobilizing support for the War Powers Resolution and coordinating actions all around the world. This includes a global protest on Saturday, June 28th (Noon local time) demanding that Trump and Vance resign immediately. Also, demanding an immediate ceasefire and all party negotiations to achieve a just and durable peace treaty as soon as practicable. We’re already or soon will commence mobilizing for all of the above through:

We need YOU to support us on all of these actions!

On June 21, 2025, Donald Trump ordered a surprise bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities, including sites under international monitoring. Without a vote from Congress. Without any public debate. Without any constitutional authority. Trump’s illegal and globally destabilizing actions are all too terrifyingly familiar. This is not just an act of war. This is the continuation of Trump’s dangerous, fascistic behavior. He ignores the law, ignores or silences dissent, and provokes chaos to increase and consolidate his illegitimate power.

We are outraged, but this moment demands more than outrage. It demands organized, coordinated resistance. Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is helping lead the charge. Will you join us? Support PDA’s Mobilization Against War and Fascism! Act Now! Pitch in for Peace! Trump’s airstrikes on Iran’s Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites shocked not only Congress but the world. Carried out without congressional authorization or clear evidence of an imminent threat, the strikes constitute a blatant violation of the U.S. Constitution as well as U.S. and international law.

The U.S. intelligence community had confirmed in March that Iran was not developing nuclear weapons. There was no emergency, no justification whatsoever. Only Trump’s irrational warmongering. International leaders responded with horror. As expected, Iran called the attack “a grave violation of the UN Charter.” They’ve far from alone in this, however. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned it could spiral into catastrophe. The EU and other nations have also condemned this unprovoked aggression.

As Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) stated: “Trump said he would end wars; now he has dragged America into one. His actions are a clear violation of our Constitution.”

Trump’s own political allies fractured. Right wing Trump supporters Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor Greene called these attacks a betrayal of the “America First” mandate to avoid endless wars.

Sen. Bernie Sanders said it plainly in Tulsa, Oklahoma: “This is so grossly unconstitutional…The only entity that can take this country to war is the U.S. Congress.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez added: “Trump’s strike on Iran constitutes grounds for impeachment.”

This is not foreign policy. This is militarized authoritarianism. We must act to stop it now, before it spreads to enflame the entire Middle East, if not the entire globe in dangerous, unnecessary conflict. Trump’s illegal, unconstitutional military strikes on Iran echo the worst traditions of unchecked presidential war-making—from Vietnam to Iraq. Worse, it reveals something more insidious: a mix of Trump’s fascist ideology and unprovoked military action harking back to Hitler’s Third Reich risking plunging the world into total war.

LBJ, Nixon and both Bushes at least sought some cover, securing War Powers Acts and/or other congressional approval for their military actions. Not Trump. He bypassed even the fig leaf of oversight. He unilaterally unleashed military violence to create a crisis, sowing fear at home and abroad. The Constitution was drafted precisely to prevent this.

We the People Want Peace, Not a Führer for a President

Please join us demanding democratic control over war powers, and removing Trump from office for holding the Constitution in contempt. PDA strongly supports the bipartisan War Powers Resolution introduced by Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY).

This bill would require Congress to vote to approve any military action—preventing any president from launching a unilateral war. As Rep. Khanna wrote: “We need to immediately return to DC and vote on Rep. Thomas Massie’s and my War Powers Resolution to prevent America from being dragged into another endless Middle East war.”

We agree. But that’s not enough. Join us in calling for impeachment proceedings. Congress must act—not just to stop Trump, but to reaffirm the rule of law itself. But we can’t leave it to elected officials alone. We must help them find their spines! Add Your Voice: Demand Congress Act Now!

PDA Is Leading, And We Need You!

We can’t do any of this without you. Will you join a local PDA chapter, volunteer for our issue teams, or donate to support our constitutional fight against fascism and war? YES, I’LL PITCH IN TO PROMOTE PEACE WITH PDA!

This isn’t just about foreign policy. It’s about who we are as a country. Donald Trump has crossed another red line, once again flouting our rule of law. By bombing another sovereign nation—without cause, without debate, and without legal authority—Trump committed a crime against the Constitution. Trump’s increasingly reckless, fascistic behavior threatens every freedom we hold dear.

Let us be clear: this is not just about Trump. It is about exposing and rolling back the militarized authoritarianism he represents. It is about building a progressive future rooted in diplomacy, justice, and people powered policy. In Lincoln’s words, a nation “of the people by the people and for the people,” not a dictator.

Let us know in the comments: How are you responding to Trump’s latest unconstitutional move? What other actions should PDA take? Let’s work together building a stronger, louder, united progressive movement.

Will you help us build a progressive, peaceful future? Action Steps Recap:

We need DIPLOMACY, NOT WAR. The majority of the United States population, including Trump supporters, do not want war, which always results in suffering and killing of innocent civilians!

Regarding this: “LBJ, Nixon and both Bushes at least sought some cover, securing War Powers Acts and/or other congressional approval for their military actions. Not Trump. He bypassed even the fig leaf of oversight. He unilaterally unleashed military violence to create a crisis, sowing fear at home and abroad. The Constitution was drafted precisely to prevent this.”

LBJ, Nixon, and both Bushes successfully used the Constitution to “legalize” their war powers while the fundamentals of their arguments were outright lies and/or obscure propaganda — they still “unleashed military violence, sowing fear at home and abroad”, just not unilaterally. “Fig leaf” is a key phrase here because if all the president is doing is trying to veil a lie in the first place, then Trump’s ignoring the process is just more openly/brazenly/truthfully honest than the others.

This is the sad situation to which we have arrived as a nation. We are approaching an utterly disgusting crescendo the culmination of which I dare look towards. If our Congress does not take a humane stand on this matter, then this country is finished — Constitution notwithstanding.
