A message from Jim Zogby

In just two weeks, Michigan voters will have the opportunity to elect some amazing Arab Americans, including U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. Abdul has been working tirelessly meeting with voters all over Michigan, but we’ve got him Monday night, July 27, at 9:00 pm ET for an Arab American Town Hall.

If you know Abdul, you know why he will be a great senator. But even in this type of climate, he has been facing some pretty ugly attacks, and I just can’t let these go.

It seems that the idea of an unapologetic progressive Arab American candidate who believes our tax dollars should go toward education and healthcare instead of supporting genocide in Palestine is such a threat to AIPAC that they have already spent $30 million to defeat Abdul—the most they’ve ever spent on a single race. And beyond the problem of this level of spending, these millions of dollars are buying ads that are trafficking in base anti-Arab racism. Abdul’s opponents have become so desperate that they have resorted to relying on an old anti-Arab trope claiming sexism. Yes, they did this to an Arab American Muslim man who has devoted his professional life to public service. I know they don’t want to debate Abdul on the substance, but to do this is shameful. 

I am proud of Abdul and I want you to hear from him directly, so please join me and our friends at Progressive Democrats of America, this Monday at 9 pm ET for a virtual town hall with Abdul El-Sayed and Michigan State Senate candidate Abbas Alawieh. Abdul and Abbas are both progressive Arab Americans who understand what we need to do to advance policies that improve people’s live—especially in the current moment our country is facing.

The truth is, the tens of millions being spent in Michigan will have an impact, and we must do everything we can to organize and win. But remember, ultimately the only thing that matters is how the people vote, and just as we have seen in primaries across the country this cycle, people have had enough. Abdul and Abbas are the change people are demanding, and I want to make sure you have the chance to hear from them directly—and to rally behind them. See you Monday night.
