Celebrate Juneteenth!
Celebrate Freedom
Juneteenth, often called America’s second Independence Day, is the newest federal holiday. It was enacted by the 117th Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021.
The History: President Lincoln signed the original Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, to take effect in rebel territory on January 1, 1863. The last act of military emancipation took place on June 19, 1865 when Major General Gordon Grangerarrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3., proclaiming, “…[A]ll slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.”
The Foundation: Juneteenth became the potent symbol of American freedom, expanding the American dream in the ongoing quest for a more perfect union. It has been celebrated continuously since 1866 to commemorate emancipation of enslaved peoples, the resilience of African American communities, and the kaleidoscope of their contributions to American innovation, including culture, science, music, and art.
The Present: This year, the 250th year of our Republic, it is very important that we take full stock of misdeeds of our ancestors and fight vigorously against all attempts to restore any remnants of a shameful, yet romanticized, past. A bloody war, Presidential leadership and three Constitutional Amendments are in our background. It is more important than ever to embrace and develop the potential of our youth and future generations to realize the full potential of our Republic.
Juneteenth, simply put, is a celebration of life, liberty, and the expression of joy. Out of immeasurable pain and degradation has blossomed the fullness of human expression, productivity, and creativity.
The quest for equality and equity has passed from generation to generation. Yet, this journey is not over; much work remains.
Progressive Democrats of America is both proud and humbled to be part of this journey, this struggle, this inclusive vision of an America that will be.
We encouage you to join a celebration in your area. If you aren’t sure there is one, reply to this email and we’ll help you find something.
