We Call for a Ceasefire—Time for a Christmas Truce
The continuing war in Ukraine is a horrible humanitarian tragedy with thousands of civilians killed and millions forced to seek asylum in neighboring countries. Apartment buildings, schools, and the infrastructure in many Ukrainian cities have been reduced to rubble. The escalating conflict presents an almost unthinkable but certainly real threat of nuclear war between the world’s two greatest military powers.
The Russian invasion of a sovereign nation clearly violates international law. Vladimir Putin’s military is the aggressor and is responsible for a war that has raged on for months and could continue for years. The Russian army has committed numerous war crimes, has illegally annexed Ukrainian territory, and continues to terrorize the civilian population.
It is PDA’s position that hostilities must cease immediately. The killings need to stop!
We join in with peace organizations worldwide in a call for a Christmas truce.
It is our hope that during this truce all parties involved will come to the peace table for good-faith negotiations. Ukraine, Russia, the United States, NATO, and other counties can and must negotiate a lasting cease-fire that will lead to a complete withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukraine.
Negotiations and peace talks must be the urgent starting point to resolve this disastrous conflict and prevent a recurrence of more hostilities. We implore all world leaders to prioritize peace and negotiation over continuing war.

This is nonsense. Putin means what he says. For him there is no negotiation. He has made this clear. He would only use a cease-fire to regroup. This is not World War I. Negotiation requires good faith on both sides, and I do not think there is even a remote chance of that happening.
This Ukrainian-American says no.
Diplomacy must replace the war during a Christmas cease-fire. Putin must negotiate — his country is falling apart. His people are becoming more and more vocal about ending this hideous war. He’s losing his grip. Only diplomacy will save face for him and his suffering country at this point.
