The President is not a King
“A Republic, if You can Keep It”
When Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was asked what type of government the Constitutional Convention of 1787 adopted, his cautionary response was, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
Never have Franklin’s words been more prescient than now. Our Presidents have all been flawed human beings with outsized egos, but only one has been a convicted felon with no respect for the rule of law and complete disdain for the aspirational foundations of our nation.
We stand at the precipice, with nearly 249 years of democratic governance–although riddled with imperfections and false starts–behind us , and a looming autocracy run by self-serving oligarchs in front of us.
Our choices are stark. We can acquiesce without struggle, we can stand by silently and allow events to unfold as they will, or we can raise our voices in the streets, the suites, the halls of Congress, and the courts to defend ourselves, our communities, and our Constitution.
At PDA, we choose the unflinching non-violent approaches of Mahatma Gandhi and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King to guide our action and strategy. Join us for weekly campaign calls and town halls Join or start a local chapter.
