Stand For Women’s Rights During The Summer For Progress
Abortion funding and access is never an easy issue to address. For each woman in this nation, access to the full range of reproductive healthcare services is often the target of the right wing as a way to restrict abortions. Not only is that counterproductive, it is also dangerous for women and those who care about women. Women’s reproductive healthcare is vital, personal to each woman and her medical providers, and not to be controlled by her ability to afford a full range of healthcare services — including abortion.
Rep. Barbara Lee’s HR771 is included in the People’s Platform for the Summer for Progress campaign, and the bill deserves our support and effort to secure more co-sponsors. As of this morning, 121 Democrats have signed on the bill which guarantees public health programs like Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP and employer-based insurance plans will cover abortion services. Equal access and funding for all women’s reproductive health services, including abortion, is consistent with our long-standing support for a woman’s right to choose.
Many years ago, when a woman legislator from a conservative leaning state was criticized for the endorsement her campaign received from Emily’s List, a prominent abortion rights organization, she stood firm in her decision of support for abortion funding. Then Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota said that based on the intensely personal, private issues that the controversy around abortion raises, we ought not to attempt to legislate matters of the heart or those of personal faith — what we must do is to make sure every woman is fully free to make her best decision about her own health and any personal beliefs that may inform her. That is as true today as it was years ago.

This is about equality and access to safe, appropriate abortion care as a part of healthcare services. It is about personal freedom for all women.
In Solidarity,
