Washington, DC (August 12, 2024) — For the first time in its history, PDA has voted overwhelmingly to endorse a Presidential candidate in the general election.  With 92% of the vote, PDA’s huge national network of progressive activists voted for an official endorsement of the Harris/Walz ticket.

According to PDA Executive Director Alan Minsky, in recent Presidential elections PDA has worked “as hard or harder” than any organization in the country to elect the Democratic nominee, even without an official endorsement.

“The difference this time is two-fold” says Minsky. “On the one hand, it’s reflective of the passion surrounding the election. PDAers understand that Donald Trump is the de facto leader of an international neo-fascist counter-offensive against democracy – and that he must be defeated.

“We see that Kamala Harris fully understands this, is passionately committed to our founding principle that ‘we the people’ are sovereign, and will make a case defending democracy that will resound across the country and the world.

“Just as important, per PDA’s official endorsement, our organization is steadfast in its commitment to a progressive agenda defined by common sense solutions in line with the wishes of the majority.  At this hour of our history, this means economic and social policies that prioritize the welfare of the majority, not the wealthy few; and a foreign policy centered by the sanctity of human life and advocacy of human and civil rights and the right of self-determination of all peoples.

“Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are calling for programs that clearly foreground the economic needs of middle- and working-class households, while alleviating poverty. We also see Harris signaling changes in foreign policy, important inflection points, that will re-ground our commitment to the rule of international law.’

Donna Smith, PDA’s national advisory board chair, added, “Kamala represents the real commitment to women and our right to freely control our own bodies. She is also my chance to hand over to future generations a political ideal that looks forward with love, with humor, with compassion, and with strength — and without a hint of weirdness. It allows me to exhale and to believe progressive voices will be at the table and will be heard.”

Minsky concluded, “PDA’s legions of activists across the country are calling, loud and clear, upon all people who wish to preserve our democratic society, to join us in defeating Donald Trump and electing Kamala Harris president of these United States.”
