Progressive Democrats of American and Young Progressive Democrats of America Stand in Solidarity with KC Tenants and the Tenants of the Quality Hill Towers and Independence Towers Building Unions On The Launch of their Historic Rent Strike
Washington, DC (Tuesday, October 1, 2024) – Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and Young Progressive Democrats of America (YPDA) proudly extend our support and solidarity to KC Tenants in Kansas City, Missouri, and the courageous tenants at Quality Hill Towers and Independence Towers as they launch their historic rent strike.
Housing is a human right. Period.
In the face of skyrocketing rent prices and exploitative practices, PDA and YPDA stand united with tenants who boldly declare, “The rent is too damn high!” We affirm that our rent money is our power—a valiant and powerful statement that underscores the right of all tenants to live in dignity and security.
PDA and YPDA recognizes the urgent need for systemic change in our housing policies. Today, the Biden/Harris administration and the Harris/Walz presidential campaign can call for the immediate repeal of the Faircloth Amendment, which has gutted public housing initiatives since the late 1990’s, and continues to be an impediment to creating equitable and truly sustainable social housing.
There’s Power in a Tenant Union
This moment marks a crucial turning point in the fight for housing justice. By organizing collectively, KC Tenants and the striking building unions at Quality Hill Towers and Independence Towers are inspiring tenants across the nation to reclaim their power, and rise up
against the reactionary forces of racial capitalism in the housing market. Their fight is not just about rent; it’s about dignity, stability, and the right to a safe home. These tenants are showing the nation that a better world is possible — when we organize.
We urge all progressives to support this movement and amplify the voices of KC Tenants, and the building unions at Quality Hill Towers and Independence Towers. Together, we can push for progressive policies that prioritize truly affordable housing, tenant rights and protections, and enforceable accountability for slumlords.
PDA and YPDA echo the sentiments of KC Tenants in demanding for accountability and justice from landlords who prioritize profit over the well-being of their residents.
Power To The Tenants!
