The Attack on the U.S. Capitol Must be Thoroughly Investigated and Prevented from Happening Again

The events of January 6, 2021, represent a shameful and dangerous turning point in American history.

Rioters and insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the orderly transfer of power and the certification of a federal election. They were encouraged, aided, and abetted by the then-President of the United States and certain members of both Houses of Congress. American governance and democracy teetered on the verge of full-blown authoritarianism as a mob broke into the Capitol and a gallows was erected in front of the building.

Republicans blocked a bipartisan, bicameral commission to investigate the breech of the U.S. Capitol. Now they are doing everything they can to rewrite history, prevent any cooperation with the House Select Committee, and intimidate members of their own party who dare to speak in opposition to the attempted insurrection or acknowledge that the election was fairly won by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Twice-impeached Donald Trump may run for President in 2024, all of the enabling House Republicans are running for re-election in 2022, and U.S. Senators who encouraged the insurrection and the Big Lie of election fraud are still in power and are planning to run for reelection. Until there is an electoral price to pay, the Republican Party will continue and accelerate its march toward authoritarian rule, as evidenced by draconian voter suppression and anti-abortion laws enacted in Texas, Florida, and elsewhere.

PDA fully supports the work of the U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. One of the best ways for us to prevent another January 6th-style insurrection is by getting all of the facts that led up to the event into the light of day and holding those culpable accountable. Call your Representative today, and tell them you support the January 6 Committee and that you expect them to support its work. Then let us know you acted.
