We Need Gun Reform!
By Debra Schrishuhn for Mike H., Donna, Mike F., Amos, Janis, Deb, Kimberly, Bryan, Dan, Judy, and Dr. Bill—your PDA National Team
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) demands that Congress act now to address mass shootings and other gun violence. Two weeks ago, a 19-year-old armed with an AR-15 assault-style semi-automatic weapon entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and killed 17 students and adults and injured at least 14 others.
This was just the latest in an epidemic of gun violence at schools and other public places. Politicoreports that already efforts in Congress to address the massacres are bogging down. PDA knows this is because the National Rifle Association (NRA) pours so much money into politicians’ pockets.
Attend a March for Our Lives Rally
What have the students done? Since that fatal day, courageous young people in Parkland and around the country have raised their voices, taken to the streets, and held politicians and the National Rifle Association accountable for this latest carnage. They started the #NeverAgain movement, organized a massive March for Our Lives event in Washington, DC, confronted NRA-funded Sen. Marco Rubio, visited the White House to force Trump to admit that action is needed, and stormed the Florida Capitol Building.
What has the public done? In the aftermath of this latest horrendous massacre, politicians’ ties to the NRA have been publicized and analyzed, over a dozen major banks and companies have cut financial ties with the NRA, a major Republican donor has threatened to withhold funding until solid action is taken, and calls for universal background checks, banning bump stocks and assault weapons, and raising the minimum age for possession of assault weapons have been growing.
What have the Republican Congress, Trump, and the NRA done? They want to bring even more guns into schools. They called the brave Parkland survivors who are speaking out “crisis actors.” Donald Trump, Jr. and others suggested that the massacre was a staged “false flag” affair to take away guns. Donald Trump described the massacre as a “setback” from all the great news about the economy. The NRA whined about losing corporate sponsorships and perks.
What can WE do? Keep up the pressure. Support the brave young people of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and other young people who demand an end to the carnage. Plan now to attend the March for our Lives in Washington, DC, on March 24 or another rally near you.
Call the US Capitol Switchboard at (202)-224-3121, ask to be connected to your Senators’ and Representative’s offices. Ask to speak to (or leave a voicemail for) the staffer working on crime or public safety issues. Say you’re their constituent and you expect them to work for and vote for common sense gun safety laws.
We need you to help PDA stand up against gun violence now!
