The Cruelty Is The Point
Every week this administration finds new ways to persecute immigrants, whether they are documented or undocumented, seeking asylum, or speaking out against oppressive government practices. Detention facilities are underfunded, overcrowded, and unsuitable for human habitation.
Immigration courts are understaffed and subject to arbitrary case load quotas. Funds needed for legitimate disaster relief, homeland security, and defense projects are being diverted to expedite building the unnecessary, racist wall on the southern border, trampling property rights and ignoring environmental safeguards. Multiple sources reported the President wants raw land seizures from private citizens—“take the land”— on the Mexican border to facilitate border wall construction.
Last week, the Trump administration aggressively moved to kill the long-standing Flores Settlement Agreement, named for Jenny Lisette Flores, a 15-year-old who fled El Salvador in the 1980s. She was detained by Immigration and Naturalization Services and subjugated among adults in dangerous detention conditions.
Under Flores the federal government must release children into the custody of licensed caregivers within 20 days, provide sanitary facilities, medical treatment, and contact with family members.
Trump’s racist immigration apparatus plans to hold thousands of refugees in detentionindefinitely, with devastating long-lasting consequences, putting unaccompanied children and families in immigration prisons, and permitting continued mistreatment inside Trump’s for-profit detention centers.
And now there are an unknown number of sick children dependent upon life saving care whose parents have been told they have 30 days to leave the country, regardless if that means their children will die.
The only good news is that people and communities keep organizing, continue protesting, and are standing strong for civil liberties. State attorneys general are bringing lawsuits against the most egregious infractions against our rule of law. Progressive Democrats of America works with coalition partners to support grassroots efforts calling attention to these outrages against humanity, and holding elected officials accountable.
Please give what you can to support our efforts. Your gift of $100, $50, $20, $10, or $5 helps us keep activists on the streets and in the halls of Congress, hold elected officials accountable, and –most importantly—elect solid progressives to Congress who will fearlessly take on comprehensive immigration reform and demand that human dignity be respected.
