To Save Our Planet, We Must Kill the Filibuster
Urgent Action Needed to Fight Climate Emergency:
The Filibuster Must Go
Process matters.
If we don’t kill the filibuster, the Biden administration’s agenda will stall. If we don’t combat voter suppression, regressive minority rule will continue despite current razor-thin Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress. And if we don’t rein in CO2 and methane emissions that intensify climate change, we cannot avoid devastating wildfires, future climate-fueled pandemics, historic flooding, increasingly violent storms, rapid degradation of both wild and arable lands, and mass extinctions that have already begun.
Yesterday, scientists from Scripps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that May’s average level of carbon dioxide was nearly 419 parts per million (ppm)—historically high and well above the generally considered maximum sustainable level of 350 ppm. Meanwhile, in the quest for some mythical sort of bipartisanship, climate change-reducing elements of the infrastructure bill have all but disappeared from negotiations.
We must include climate change reduction measures in the infrastructure bill. We must pass the infrastructure bill, election/voting rights protection, and other parts of the Biden administration’s agenda at full strength. To achieve these critical goals, we must get rid of the archaic filibuster.
Call your Senators right now and demand that they end the filibuster rule. It’s already been waived for judicial confirmations, including Supreme Court Justices. Drop us a line and let us know you acted.
Then donate whatever you can so that we can keep the pressure on Congress.
