One of the greatest writers of the 20th century, James Baldwin, was born August 2, 1924, in Harlem, New York. Despite or due to his station in life as an African American gay man, his writings helped establish him as one of the top writers of the times. Baldwin delved into his own life to provide unflinching looks at the Black experience in America. Never wanting to be a spokesperson or a leader, Baldwin saw his personal mission as “bearing witness to the truth.”

Cori Bush and Ilhan Omar have been targeted by Republicans. What they are experiencing can be summed up by this Baldwin quote: “The price one pays for pursuing any profession, or calling, is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side.” There are no words for Republican ugliness.

But simply put, we can’t let what happened to Jamaal Bowman happen to fellow Squad Members Cori Bush or Ilhan Omar in their rapidly approaching primaries in August.

They’ve both been consistent and powerful progressive voices in Congress, so of course AIPAC and other dark Republican money is flowing into the district to defeat them in their primaries just around the corner. Just as James Baldwin spoke truth to power, so do Cori and Ilhan continue in his courageous tradition.

The good news: both have a path to victory that we’ll be discussing on the call.
