Even if you did not embrace American triumphalism at the end of the Cold War, it was hard to deny that capitalist democracy was firmly established as the ruling ideology for the foreseeable future. You might have even scoffed at Francis Fukuyama’s proclamation of the “End of History”; but I know of no one who thought that the hegemony of this American-led global liberal order would unravel so dramatically less than four decades later. 

Furthermore, if you’re old enough to remember the mid-1970s (let alone the ’60s or ’50s), the idea that American optimism, and the inexorable march of progress, would be at best a distant memory in the early 21st century would have seemed absurd. 

But here we are. Every single day since Trump was re-inaugurated, more of the core principles of the American political system and the very laws laid down in our most sacred national text – the Constitution – are summarily dismissed by the current Administration. 

How the hell did we get here?
