Celebrate Compassion, Not Colonialism
Support National Nurses’ Relief Efforts

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) was founded in 2004 to work for basic progressive principles such as healthcare as a human right and economic and social justice. While many of us take a day off, our allies from National Nurses United (NNU) are working hard to help hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. So while the calendar honors Christopher Columbus—who brought death and destruction to the Caribbean—the Nurses are bringing relief to that region and saving lives. Please donate now to support their efforts.

We do not consider Columbus a hero. He didn’t discover anything, because indigenous people were already living in this hemisphere. He didn’t even set foot on the mainland of North or South America. His legacy is a fabrication and a cover up. We feel this day should celebrate indigenous people and coexistence, not violence and exploitation.

A week ago, we were forced to once again come to grips with the unacceptable level of violence in our nation as reports of the Las Vegas mass murder dominated the news. Is it possible that the real legacy of Christopher Columbus—the slaughter of indigenous people and the ongoing attacks on Native Americans, as well as the slave trade, and other atrocities—established horrendous levels of violence that plague our society to this day?

Police killings of unarmed individuals. Hatred heaped upon immigrants. Bigotry against LGBTQ individuals. Misogyny. Intolerance. White Supremacy. All these ugly forces date back to Columbus’ hostile invasion of the Western Hemisphere, and glare at us every day from our TV and computer screens. We don’t have to accept this. Together, we can build a better world. Join PDA working to overcome these terrible tendencies in American culture. Click here to Tell Congress to Pass the Dream Act.
