The Real Border Emergency
In solidarity, Dan O’Neal and Debra Schrishuhn for Alan, Mike F, Mike H, Janis, Dr Bill, Kimberly, Bryan, and Shayna—your PDA National Team
As Trump abuses his Executive Order powers to declare an emergency where none exists, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) will not be silent! We renew our demand that Congress refuse to appropriate one cent for Trump’s worthless, wasteful, racist wall.
Make your voice heard! Call your House member and Senators now. Identify yourself as a constituent, and ask to speak to the staffer working on immigration issues, or the chief of staff. Leave a voice mail if they’re not available, and call back every day until you get an answer. Tell them: “No abuse of Emergency Powers when no emergency exists! No Wall! No family separations! No inhumane treatment of migrants!” Then, let us know what happened when you called.
Even though the Trump administration’s cruel policy of ripping children from their parents’ arms supposedly ended last Summer, families continue to be separated, and children remain in harsh, inhumane, and isolated conditions. In Tuesday’s New York Times, a front page article entitled “Fevers, Fractures and Meager Care at the Border” exposed the horrible treatment migrants receive from the Trump administration’s government officials. At least two migrant children have died in government custody.
Trump Administration officials publicly stated that these avusive and even fatal policies are designed to deter asylum seekers—in violation of human decency and international law. Because of the Trumpublicans’ intentional callous policy of understaffing at official border crossings, wait times for asylum requests are increasing. This is forcing families to attempt to mske crossings at non-ports of entry.
Last week, religious leaders and a coalition of immigration advocacy groups tracked down 29 parents deported without their children, and helped them gain entrance to the U.S. to plead for asylum and family reunification. Their efforts are noble, but too often too little too late, and these family separations shouldn’t be happening at all.
Building walls and more prison facilities is not the answer. The President’s “Emergency Declaration” is an outright political sham aimed at appeasing his right-wing base. We reject these cynical, extreme right win policies, and we reject all efforts to move money from real human needs like disaster relief to build Trump’s wall—a brazen vanity project and hideous monument to racism.
We in PDA say it’s time to send at least 5,000 social workers, nurses, and doctors to the border—not more troops and detention agents. If we are going to spend money at the border, let’s spend it helping—not harming—people.
House Democrats, joined by 13 Republicans who still care about upholding separation of powers as stated in the U.S. Constitution, recently voted to rescind the President’s egregious emergency declaration. A majority of Senators have declared their intent to support this measure, ensuring its passage—but without a veto-proof majority. Only continuing and accelerating public pressure will force Congress to act responsibly.
Call and email your members of Congress now.
