Forging Bonds of Solidarity with Progressives in Europe

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is all about building the massive progressive movement we need to effect necessary change, and that commitment includes reaching out to likeminded allies—wherever they may be. Last week, I was honored to be invited to a series of meetings in Brussels, Belgium, organized to establish greater coordination between progressives in Europe and America. The meetings were organized by The Party of the European Left as well as by the GUE/NGL (i.e. the left coalition) Members of The European Parliament.

As the Executive Director of PDA, I was part of the American Contingent along with Maria Svart, (National Director of the Democratic Socialists of America), and David Duhalde, (Political Director of Our Revolution). Alexandra Rojas, (Executive Director of the Justice Democrats), who was unable to travel to Belgium, but participated in the sessions remotely.

The inspiration for the meetings came, in part, from Senator Bernie Sanders’ call for the development of an “international progressive front.” A truly inspiring series of meetings resulted. Nobody turned a blind eye to the fact that we are living in troubling times, with the rise of the far right across Europe, the U.S., and much of the globe.

However, there was also great enthusiasm; in particular about the unprecedented growth of the left in America. Everyone recognized that in our ever-increasingly globalized world, it is essential that left progressives across the world share ideas and forge deep bonds of solidarity. For that alone, these meetings were of the utmost importance.

Also, we came away with a renewed sense of confidence that at this hour of history:

  • The political “mainstream” has been exposed as failing to deliver on its promises of freedom and prosperity
  • Only the progressive left has positive answers; only we offer solutions to the crises facing society and the planet
  • People across the globe are increasingly receptive to our policies to promote economic, social, and environmental justice

PDA played a big role at these meetings, which established a strong bond of solidarity between American and European progressives—the groups are committed to expanding this new international progressive movement to every part of the globe.

Of course, to continue international solidarity requires resources. As Progressive Democrats of America looks toward pursuing a worldwide activist agenda, we need your generous support more than ever. Please support our year-round work with a monthly gift of $50, $27, $20.20, $10, or $5 so we can sustain our work to build a progressive, sustainable future.
