Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is honoring Labor as we prepare to celebrate Labor Day weekend. We have organized labor to thank for weekends, overtime, safer workplaces, and so much more! Join us thanking labor as well as doing a victory lap for the Summer for Progress. We’ve spent the summer organizing with a huge coalition for the People’s Platform, 8 bills we urged all Democratic Representatives to cosponsor. One of the bills—Sen. Bernie Sanders’ and Rep. Bobby Scott’s Raise the Wage Act—would enact a Living Wage. Every American would benefit from a living wage economy.
The People’s Platform is a wide-ranging progressive platform in the spirit of the New Deal. The Raise the Wage Act captures the spirit of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words: “By living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level—I mean the wages of a decent living.” (1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act). The living wage was a cornerstone of FDR’s proposed “Second Bill of Rights.” A living wage would make work pay, and make our economy work. It’s time for us to get the raise we’re due.
Click here to help the effort with a generous contribution, and please make it monthly if you can, as this and other campaigns we will be working on will continue through the months ahead. We need the Raise the Wage Act. Once $15 is reached, it would adjust the minimum wage each year to keep pace with growth in the typical worker’s wages, a true Living Wage. It would also phase out the outdated sub-minimum wage for tipped workers, which has been frozen at a meager $2.13 since 1991 and phase out the sub minimum wage for workers under the age of 20.
