The United States Postal Service is one of the few governmental agencies explicitly authorized by the U.S. Constitution. It has been delivering letters, documents, and packages—including essential medicines—to Americans throughout the country since 1792, with roots predating the American Revolution.
Now the onset of the coronavirus pandemic has caused a collapse of commercial mail, threatening the USPS’s ability to continue serving our nation as soon as early summer.
Onerous legislative burdens—chiefly, the requirement that USPS pre-pay 50 years of retiree health care obligations—have put the agency on precarious and unsustainable financial footing.
Previous $multi-trillion rescue bills provided no emergency appropriations or debt relief, merely a provision for additional borrowing authority.
The same legislation contained a $500 billion corporate slush fund, and Trump nullified oversight provisions in his signing statement.

The choice is ours. We must act now to protect our future, or we will suffer the consequences. That said, as the massive spending we’re seeing shows, we have more than enough resources to overcome our current challenges and fundamentally reform our society.
We can cope with the pandemic crisis and promote economic and social justice to ensure a high-quality standard of living for all of us. We as progressives will continue mobilizing to make it so.
P.S.: Please remember to RSVP to Mike Fox to join our Healthcare Emergency Virtual Town Hall / Webinar this Wednesday May 6th, 4-5pm ET, 1-2pm PT. Mike will provide all the call-in information.
Then, join PDA investing every month to enact Medicare For All and demanding reasonable, effective and fair COVID-19 emergency policies.
The US Postal system is absolutely necessary, especially at such a very vulnerable time. It is insane to think it should be cut back. In fact, the mail is heavier than ever, and more mail persons should be hired. Our mailman is exhausted and works overtime.
