Support the Striking Workers in Farrell, PA; While Building the Movement for Medicare for All
Tina B. Shannon | President, PA Steel Valley Progressive Democrats of America
Right now, nothing is more important than building solidarity among our people in the struggle for our needs. Standing with striking workers fighting to protect their healthcare is the the way our solidarity lives and breathes in the world.
As you all know, healthcare through Medicare for All is an essential part of that struggle. Getting others to join us in that struggle means building consciousness, focusing attention on the ways that our healthcare system has been captured by corporate interests that value profit-taking far above providing high-quality healthcare.
As union workers go on strike to protect their contract-sanctioned healthcare, they are standing against corporations that constantly push healthcare costs on to individuals. Instead of drawing a line at ever-increasing costs because of ever-increasing healthcare profit-taking, employers push these costs on to employees.
Not only does this severely hurt the employees and their families by limiting their ability to afford healthcare, it eliminates the possibility of union workers gaining wage increases. It hurts our communities. Money drained from the unionized workforce goes to insurance company executives and Wall Street profits, not into our communities, not into buying power that benefits our small businesses.
This is a solidarity lesson. This is how we can build consciousness through concrete work support of union workers fighting for healthcare.
It’s times like these when we must not just talk the talk, but also walk the walk.
Thank you so much for anything you can do.
