Sunday’s Town Hall: Why Progressives Must Lead on AI Policy
Join us Sunday at 4pm ET/1pm PT when we will discuss one of the most urgent issues facing the country and the world: the development of Artificial Intelligence.
We’ll be joined by Christian Nunes, a great friend of PDA who until recently was the President of NOW, the National Organization for Women. Christian is one of the nation’s leading experts on the negative social impact of AI-generated “deep fakes.”
Together, we will discuss both the promise and the peril of this new technology. RSVP Now!

Less than a month ago, Bernie Sanders spoke with Nobel Laureate Geoffrey Hinton, recognized as one of the “Godfathers” of AI, at a special event at Georgetown University. The dialogue focused on the urgent necessity of having public oversight and regulation of Artificial Intelligence – something that currently is frighteningly absent.
Never before has a developing technology attracted so much investment as AI – and, while many new technologies have been over-hyped since the dawn of the industrial revolution two centuries ago, none more so than AI. Both its advocates and detractors claim it will transform every aspect of our lives.
Since Sanders and Hinton spoke at Georgetown, Bernie has produced no fewer than four new videos about AI – all four highlight the urgent need for oversight and regulation.
Not surprisingly, President Trump and the oligarchic heads of six of the seven giant companies that dominate the development of AI in the United States adamantly oppose Bernie’s position. In fact, last week, President Trump went so far as to sign an Executive Order announcing that he will withhold federal funding from any state or locality that tries to regulate AI production or distribution.
We, at PDA, stand with Bernie. AI policy must become a progressive priority.
At Sunday’s Town Hall Christian F. Nunes, the recent President of the National Organization for Women and an expert on the negative impact of AI “deep fakes,” will be in dialogue with PDA Executive Director Alan Minsky. Christian and Alan will explain why it is essential for progressives to lead on AI; and they will outline a progressive policy approach to AI that protects working-class and white collar jobs, as well as the environment, education, and children; and also bans AI from military decision-making.
And, yes, we will address the greatest fear associated with AI – that it will soon create a generation of autonomous computers that are more intelligent than humans, which are also capable of learning new lessons from their own unique experiences. With this, it becomes plausible that they will outgrow their reliance upon the directions they receive from humans, learning ways to survive independently. And if they conclude that human beings are an impediment to the achievement of their goals…
Clearly, we must do everything possible to avoid such a scenario – even if its odds are infinitesimal. We will discuss this and so much more on Sunday. RSVP Now!
