No Tax Vote Until Doug Jones Sworn In

In a historic upset on Tuesday, December 12, Democrat Doug Jones won the special election for U.S. Senate in Alabama.

But Republicans in Congress are trying to jam through their tax bill in the next few weeks before he’s officially in the Senate — because they know once he’s there, it will be much harder to pass.

This bill is a scam, giving away hundreds of billions of dollars to wealthy Americans and big corporations. It would affect all of us, slashing funding for health care, education, environmental protection, and the benefits our seniors have earned. Late-night votes, hand-scribbled amendments, and secret deals with lobbyists — all because they know that the bill is historically unpopular with the American people.

There should be no votes on the tax bill until Senator-elect Doug Jones is sworn in. The people of Alabama have spoken, and they picked Doug Jones. His constituents deserve his vote on the tax bill. Our democracy demands it. Elections matter.
