Today, PDA Celebrates Roe v. Wade

In the wake of 2019’s Women’s Marches—supporting women’s rights, voting rights, and the need for Medicare For All—and amidst celebrations of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., reaffirming his dedication to human rights at all levels, today Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) celebrates the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that decriminalized abortion, and recognized women’s rights to control their own bodies by availing themselves of the full spectrum of women’s reproductive healthcare.

On January 22, 1973, Chief Justice Warren E. Burger and six members of the Court ruled that an individual’s rights against government interference includes a woman’s decision to continue or terminate her pregnancy. In a 7 to 2 decision, the Court balanced an individual’s right to privacy and the state’s interests in protecting a potential human life. This landmark decision is under greater threat today than ever, with a right wing Senate and a 5-4 right wing majority on the U.S. Supreme Court. This, after hyper-partisan Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked President Obama’s moderate nominee, letting Trump appoint two extremists to the Court. We must elect strong progressives to rebalance our government!

PDA’s work for women’s rights will continue until we reach full equality. It took far too long for America to recognize basic women’s rights—to vote, own property, secure credit, attend college, work in our chosen field, and—thanks to the Roe v. Wade decision—exercise control over our bodies and reproductive health.

PDA works ceaselessly to expand all human rights by supporting progressive champions for elected office, by educating lawmakers on the vital importance of essential freedoms through sound progressive policy-making, and by making all of our voices heard in the halls of Congress, at Congressional offices around the U.S., and on the street.

Please support our continuing work to ensure women’s reproductive rights through election of progressive leaders with a gift today of $100, $50, $27, $10, or whatever you can afford. Your donation will keep us working for you. We cannot doing anything without your support. Together, we’ve accomplished so much, but there’s so much more to do. Please contribute generously to support our mobilizing for justice and equality for all.

In solidarity,

P.S. Please pitch in $1000, $100, or whatever you can afford to support our organizing for progressive victories in the 2020 primaries and general election!
