Please Give Now To Support Our MFA Organizing!
Thinking globally but acting locally, we at PDA are committed to having the discussions with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and in taking the actions needed to move these measures forward in our communities. Of course, this will only happen if we work together with our many terrific partner groups, like National Nurses United, with their Barnstorming events, scheduled for early next month.
Sign up to help host a Barnstorming Event to raise awareness and mobilize constituents of those members of Congress, old and new, who need to understand the power and commitment of the rapidly increasing populist movement for #SinglePayer expanded and improved #MedicareForAll.
Call in to discuss these actions and related topics on this month’s PDA Healthcare Human Rights Issue Team national conference call this evening—January 9th at 9pm ET, 6pm PT.
As we have done now for years with our Educate Congress Letter Drops, we will again support strong progressive legislation in Congress, and push elected officials off the fence into cosponsoring bills, and putting foes of #HealthcareJustice on notice that we will persuade them or we will work to defeat them at the ballot box. Contact Mike Fox to get involved with our Educate Congress Letter Drops!
You and Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) work hard to promote progressive candidates and policy. Help amplify our message in street actions, letter drops, rallies, and parades with our new Healthcare Not Warfare T-shirts, rally signs, buttons, and bumper stickers. Visit the PDA Store today and order now, before U.S Postal rates increase on January 27.
The new Congress—specifically the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives—is abuzz with the prospects of hearings on MFA in the various committees of jurisdiction. This even though the updated version of the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All legislation (HR 676) hasn’t even been dropped yet.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)—Co-Chair of the Medicare for All Caucus and the Progressive Caucus—promises the reintroduction shortly, and newly reinstated Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi agreed to hold hearings—something that has never been achieved before!
Please contact your Representative and urge him or her to join the Medicare for All Caucus.Remember to share this action alert on social media and with your friends (Note: please remain patient if the action alert system is still connecting you with a recently defeated or retired Senator or Representative. Updates are in progress.)
The Senate Medicare for All bill (S 1804)—first introduced in 2017 by Sen. Bernie Sanders—will likely also be improved to include further proposed benefits. This, as a result of the new report on the economic feasibility of improved Medicare for All, presented Sanders Institute Gathering by Prof. Robert Pollin of UMass Amherst and the PERI Group.
Improvements will likely include such upgrades as full prescription drug, mental health, and long-term care (or Life Time Care) benefits, as well as dental, vision, and hearing which are glaringly absent even from traditional Medicare coverage.
Additionally, we can expect hearings on what is known as the State Based Universal Healthcare (SBUHC) Act, which had been introduced in the last session also by Rep. Jayapal, which if passed would facilitate the granting of needed waivers by states moving forward with their own #SinglePayer plans. Former Speaker Paul Ryan refused to let the House discuss this legislation, but with our coalition organizing we can make sure it will be brought to committee in the new 116thCongress.
We know given the clarity of the moral and fiscal arguments in favor of #MedicareForAll, all members of Congress will want sooner or later to be on the right side of history on this issue. For it’s really not about right versus left, it’s about right versus wrong. PDA is prioritizing our work to end wars and occupations and to enact Medicare for All with our Healthcare Not Warfare (HNW) Campaign.
Please join the PDA Phone Team making easy, effective calls from your own home with Mike “Phone Guy” Fox to help out! No time to make calls? Please pitch in to support HNW phone banking, mobilization materials, and other organizing efforts.
