Washington, D.C.—Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) congratulated the Progressive Democrats who won smashing statewide victories in Virginia and New Jersey, as well as many state and local elections there and elsewhere. The group is also heartened that voters easily passed Medicaid Expansion in Maine.
PDA Executive Director Donna Smith said, “As Progressive Democrats of America, we celebrate these resounding wins. Also we call on our fellow Democrats to keep in mind that these were all base-driven victories that rewarded strong progressive candidates and policies. We warn against overconfidence and ‘moderating’ aka compromising our principles as we continue to work for victories in the midterm elections next year. PDA organizes around progressive solutions.”
Smith added, “Many explained that their votes that delivered these big victories related to the need for fundamental healthcare reform, especially Improved Medicare for All. In Maine, 70,000 people will soon have healthcare as their state becomes the first in the Union to expand Medicaid via a voter referendum that carried by 18 points. Voters in Virginia, Washington, and New Jersey also spoke clearly in favor of healthcare as a human right.”
Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots political action committee. The organization was founded in 2004 to transform the Democratic Party and U.S. politics by working inside the Democratic Party and outside with peace, justice, civil rights, environmental, and other reform movements. PDA’s Healthcare Not Warfare campaign brings together the need for a comprehensive universal healthcare system with our advocacy for scaled-down military spending and reliance on non-military approaches to foreign policy, rather than regime change and military action.
The PDA National Advisory Board includes: Representatives John Conyers, Jr., Barbara Lee, Keith Ellison, Raul Grijalva, and James McGovern; as well as progressive leaders including Academy Award winning documentarian Michael Moore, Actress / Activist Mimi Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Rodney Sadler, Author Jim Hightower, and Radio Hosts / Authors Lila Garrett and Thom Hartmann. Esteemed activists Michael Lighty, Medea Benjamin, Steve Cobble, Kristin Cabral, Marjorie Cohn, and Dr. Paul Song, M.D. also serve on the PDA Advisory Board.

The people need to know how toxic Trump & Co. are. PDA works hard to make that understood, but we have him to thank for proving it. Honesty, facts, legitimate alarm over losing our democracy are our allies. Let’s keep telling it like it is, let’s stop the bleeding before it is too late, and let’s not allow anything to distract us. Ridding our country and our world of Trumpism is not a choice: it’s a mandate for survival.
