We remember that Hurricane Florence, which has faded from headlines in just two weeks, is still flooding the Carolinas. Swarming floodwater mosquitos are now spreading disease amid the extensive destruction. More than a million people had to evacuate their homes, facing months or years of recovery efforts.

Puerto Rico is still suffering massive power shortages, inadequate clean drinking water, and loss of infrastructure over a year after Hurricane Maria. More than two months after a court-imposed deadline for family reunification, over 130 immigrant children remain separated from their parents, many of whom were summarily deported without their kids. Recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), remain in legislative limbo a year after Trump tried to end the program. And on and on and on….
