We’re into the final week of the 2022 midterm election cycle. We, at PDA, are working non-stop to lift progressive candidates to victory and also win key swing races in the House and the Senate so that Democrats can maintain governing majorities in both houses.

As PDA Executive Director, I’ve published an opinion piece in CommonDreams on why voting for Democrats in this midterm is essential for protecting our democracy and the core principle that all people are equal in American society.

In the article I explain that the Democratic Party, in an unprecedented move, has committed to passing historic legislation that will reaffirm the 1965 Voting Rights Act (which was effectively overturned by the anti-Democratic 2013 Shelby County Supreme Court ruling) and codify Roe v. Wade, by creating a filibuster carve-out in the Senate to pass these bills, so that they only need 50 votes in the Senate to pass this historic legislation.

In doing so, Democrats will deliver a hammer blow against the 50-year effort by the American right wing to roll back the Civil Rights movement and deny women full equality—but they need to hold onto their House Majority and win 52 Senate seats because conservative Democrats Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema refuse to support such a filibuster “carve-out.”
