Michael Moore to Take One-Man Anti-Trump Show to Broadway

May 2, 2017

‘The Terms of My Surrender’ will run for twelve weeks in July

Documentary filmmaker and activist Michael Moore will bring a new one-man show protesting President Donald Trump to Broadway, the New York Times reported Monday.

The show, “The Terms of My Surrender,” will run eight times a week for twelve weeks starting in July at the 1,018-seat Belasco Theater, he said. It will be a cross between entertainment and rallying cry, “a very developed piece of entertainment for people who like to think.”

“It’s a humorous play about a country that’s just elected a madman—I mean, there’s really no other way to put it,” he told the Times.

Performing it on Broadway was important, he added.

“We’re 10 blocks from Trump Tower, we’re in the corporate capital of America, we’re in the financial capital of America, we’re in the media capital of America,” Moore said to reporter Michael Paulson. “If one was going to stand on a stage and do the things that I’m going to do, there’s only one place to do it, and it’s here in this city and it’s right here at the epicenter of creative expression and free speech.”

Promotional posters for the performance read, “Can a Broadway show bring down a sitting president?”

Moore has been vocal about opposing Trump and reforming the Democratic Party. Still, he cautioned that “The Terms of My Surrender” would touch on more than the president.

“To say it’s just about Trump would simplify it,” he said. “I think people will find themselves laughing one minute and wanting to go look for some pitchforks and torches the next.”

“The Terms of My Surrender” will be directed by the Tony Award-winning Michael Mayer, who also directed the boundary-pushing musicals “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and “Spring Awakening.”
