January 6 was a Dry Run: Danger Remains
Trump may be Out of Office, but the Threat to our Democracy Remains
Despite nearly universal opposition from congressional Republicans the House Select Committee continues to investigate the insurrection on January 6. Over 300 witnesses have cooperated. Thousands of documents have been examined. More witnesses and documents have been subpoenaed. As evidence mounts, a salient point emerges: the attempt to subvert the 2020 presidential election was deliberate, pervasive, and calculated.
Committee member Rep Jamie Raskin sends a stark warning:
Long after Donald Trump is gone, we’ll be dealing with a movement of violent, neo-Fascist elements who came very close to knocking over the U.S. government. And they know it. Their Web sites are filled with proud commemorations of January 6th. They lament only that they left their firearms back in their hotel rooms and in their cars. They fault themselves only for not completing the job on January 6th. And remember: the political scientists tell us that the sign of a successful coup is a recent unsuccessful coup, an event where they can diagram and analyze their previous mistakes so they can correct them the next time around.
PDA fully supports the committee’s efforts to expose the insurrection and surrounding attempted coup. We recognize the ongoing threat to our democracy. We are racing to get Congress to enact sound policies on social justice, environmental protection, universal healthcare, gun safety and violence prevention, and the rights of workers, women, voters, and vulnerable communities.
To those ends we will soon be endorsing a slate of progressive candidates who will fight for these policy priorities and uphold the structure of our democratic form of government.
We at PDA work 24/7 and 365 days a year. And we need your monthly gift of financial support to sustain our efforts. For PDA, for the health of our democracy, for all of us, please give whatever fits your budget. We’re counting on you.
These are dangerous times.
