We Need Immediate Action on Combating the Climate Crisis: Help PDA by Becoming a Monthly Sustainer Today

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: After months of quiet negotiation tailored specifically to his demands, Sen. Joe Manchin “unequivocally” rejected the proposed climate and tax elements of the latest Democratic spending proposal.

Meanwhile, 2022 is shaping up to be a record year in climate. South America and Australia were hit with heat waves in January. Southern California broke records in February. India, Pakistan, and Australia experienced intense heat in March-April. The U.S. had rolling heat waves throughout May. In mid-June the Midwestern and Southeastern U.S. experienced an historic heat wave. In July, Europe is currently simmering from Norway to Italy to the U.K., with wildfires raging across the continent. Historic floods from China to Germany have claimed lives and wrought massive property damage. Since 2000, the number and duration of drought conditions worldwide has risen 29 percent, according to the U.N. Currently, more than 2.3 billion people face water stress. And hurricane season in the U.S. is just getting started….

Now we are not trying to conflate weather with changing climatic patterns, but climate change is accelerating, causing weather systems to become ever more unstable and volatile, and mitigation solutions implemented today take years if not decades to have significant effects.

We must implement policy changes today, not in September, not in the next Congress, not in the next administration. If Joe Manchin is standing in the way of federal legislation, then we must find other ways to combat the climate crisis now while we prepare for a post-Manchin Senate.

PDA is working alongside climate allies to make a multi-faceted approach to this existential crisis, from local actions to international cooperation. We have been stepping up to the plate, and will continue to advocate for strong sustainable climate policy and leaders, but we need your continuing support to sustain and expand our efforts.
