Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) supports improved Medicare for All to guarantee a single standard of high-quality care for all without financial barriers, while saving taxpayers and consumers hundreds of $billions each year. This publicly-financed system would deliver healthcare to all—with no bills, no co-pays, no deductibles, and no medically-caused bankruptcies.

Nationally, PDA is committed to Improved Medicare for All. We are also working within various states for single payer systems—California especially, but also in Florida, Colorado, and Maryland. See below for specific updates.

The Healthy California Act

In California, PDA—led by Dr. Bill Honigman and Judy Hess, PDA CA State Co-coordinators—has been mobilizing in support of the Healthy California Act (SB 562). The California State Senate passed the bill back in June of 2017, but California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon put it on hold—blocking a vote. Studies have shown (and systems around the world have proven) that Single Payer would save over $30 billion in tax dollars per year and save more than 3,000 lives per year in California.

We’re working with our Campaign for a Healthy California allies—including the California Nurses Association (CNA)—demanding a floor vote on Single Payer. The California Democratic Party has had Single Payer Healthcare in its platform for over a decade. PDA will mobilize at this year’s convention to drive home that point to Speaker Rendon and all others who are blocking needed progress.

Please click here to contact Dr. Bill Honigman if you can volunteer to help out. Please click hereand give generously to help PDA bring people and materials to the California Democratic Party Convention so we can make the case for Single Payer and other key progressive issues!

The Healthy Maryland Act

PDA Maryland is watching the inspiring efforts in other states, and working closely with our friends National Nurses United (NNU), Our Revolution, and others in Maryland to gain cosponsors and support for our own single payer healthcare legislation. Please support our efforts. If you’re in Maryland, contact Mike Hersh to volunteer. Also, please click here to give whatever you can to support our Medicare For All / Single Payer Healthcare Fund.

Lead sponsor Maryland Senator Paul Pinsky explains, “The United States remains the only industrialized nation that does not have universal health care. This legislation creates the Healthy Maryland program, which will provide health care services to all residents of Maryland under a single payer system.”

PDA Is Organizing For Healthcare

We’re honoring the commitment to single payer our founder Tim Carpenter established. Besides all her incredible leadership on healthcare with PDA, our Executive Director, Donna Smith, helps organize with the Health Care for All Colorado Foundation; the Colorado Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), and Health Care for All Colorado. She is also a founding cochair of PDA’s Healthcare Not Warfare campaign.

Kurt Bateman, Co-Coordinator of the PDA Healthcare Human Rights / Healthcare For All Issue Team (with Dr. Bill), also keeps busy working with the One Payer States group, helping state-based single payer efforts. He provides leadership and insights to help Medicare for All organizing.

PDA is happy to welcome everyone to the our regular Health Care is a Human Right calls. Click here (and scroll down) to sign up for the PDA Healthcare Team, and other issue teams.
