Insiders Freezing Out Challengers
Yours for democracy, Mike Hersh for Alan, Mike F, Deb, Janis, Dan, Shayna, Dr Bill, Kimberly, and Bryan—your PDA National Team
We’ve been hearing a lot about the DCCC’s anti-democratic tactics this week. We sent the following email last month, April 9th. We felt it warrants another look, and we welcome all the concerned voters and organizations who are joining our shared demand for a more democratic Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) was founded in 2004 to support progressive candidates—including recruiting and electing primary challengers—because no other organization was dedicated to that mission. Our most famous achievement was “drafting” Bernie Sanders to run for President with our Run Bernie Run Campaign. Without that effort, it’s possible that Bernie might never have run in 2016.
We launched our campaign in 2013—long before most people had even heard of Bernie. We all know how that turned out, with Bernie as a front runner for the 2020 nomination, elevating and mainstreaming the policies he ran on—Medicare For All, a Living Wage, Decisive Action on Climate, and much more. But it’s not all good news. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC or D Triple C) just announced a policy designed to freeze out challengers and to protect corporatist / GOP Lite incumbents.
As they put it: “The core mission of the DCCC is electing House Democrats, which includes supporting and protecting incumbents. To that end, the DCCC will not conduct business with, nor recommend to any of its targeted campaigns, any consultant that works with an opponent of a sitting Member of the House Democratic Caucus.” (Emphasis added.)
The DCCC is trying to cut off the rise of new progressive stars—the next AOC—with these restrictive new rules. PDA is fighting back, and we need your help right now.
A lot of people don’t know that the DCCC withholds support from viable candidates unless they pay for polling and other services from DCCC-approved consultants. Now, the DCCC wants to shut down challengers before they can even get started by freezing out any consultant willing to help an up and coming candidate. This would make an already entrenched Congressional power structure impervious to needed challenges and even less accountable—the opposite of what voters demand and need.
PDA is fighting back! We need your help now to redouble our efforts to support challengers and to force the Democratic Party to be more democratic, progressive, and responsive to you. Please support our year-round work with a monthly gift of $50, $27, $20.20, $10, or $5—or a one-time gift—to rebuild, remake, and reimagine the Democratic Party as a true People’s Party, dedicated to enacting the policies and legislation we all need to survive and thrive in the 21st century.
