ICYMI: You’re essential to progress
By Thom Hartmann, PDA National Advisory Board
Is America a progressive nation? Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and I agree it is. That means to win again, the Democrats must recapture their New Deal progressivism, and advocate for the populist policies that fueled the meteoric rise of Bernie Sanders’ campaign. Since its founding in 2004, PDA has been dedicated to helping Democrats win by bringing the Democratic Party back to its progressive roots. This has been one of my mantras for years. That’s why I’m proud to serve on PDA’s National Advisory Board.
On my show, I’d frequently discussed how Democrats can win elections by “feeling the Bern.” As we reported, Bernie Sanders is the Democrats’ best hope to beat Trump in 2020. Recent polling shows Bernie would beat Trump by 13%, 51% to 38%. That’s the widest margin of any Democratic hopeful in the poll that also asked about Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, Cory Booker, and others.
PDA really listened to the 99%, and then they helped launch Bernie’s presidential campaign specifically so that he would raise critically important issues. It’s not an overstatement to say this led to a sea change in American politics. Voices like PDA’s, Bernie’s, and many others’ are speaking to millions and millions of voters.
Although his sincerity is dubious at best, Trump campaigned on key progressive positions including promising to tear up bad trade deals like NAFTA as well as pledging to protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Trump has predictably flip flopped on all of those promises. Still, those progressive promises attracted enough voters to help him eke out a narrow victory despite losing the popular vote. This indicates the power of progressive politics.
Now, PDA is hard at work recruiting new strong progressive candidates to run for Congress in 2018. They’ve been successful in the past, helping progressives like Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Representatives John Conyers, Jr, Keith Ellison, Jim McGovern, Barbara Lee, Raul Grijalva, Rick Nolan, Mark Pocan, Tulsi Gabbard, Jamie Raskin, Pramila Jayapal, Ted Lieu, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Nanette Barragan, and others win. PDA needs your help now to make the big difference we need in November 2018. Only a newly-empowered progressive leadership in the House and Senate can restrain Trump.
Dig deeply now and donate generously to help PDA elect progressives to Congress. Signing up for the Win 2018 Sustainer Team at $20.18 per month would help so much, but PDA appreciates anything you can spare.
Remember, “Democracy is not a spectator sport!” Get involved!
