Are We Prepared For The Deadly Hurricane Season?

As I write this email, Puerto Rico had declared a state of emergency. The island is in the direct path of Tropical Storm Dorian, expected to hit tomorrow with predicted hurricane force winds. The National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch for the island early this morning.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) pressed Congress for action in the aftermath of the 2017 hurricane season, and we continue to prioritize prompt and sufficient disaster relief in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands as well as in the rest of the United States. Call your Senators and Representative at 202-224-3121 and Click Here to email them.

Nearly two years after Hurricanes Irma and then Maria devastated the region in September 2017, some 30,000 homes in Puerto Rico still have blue tarps as roofs and the electrical grid remains prone to outages even during brief rain showers.

These storms caused nearly 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico and $90 billion in damage, but less than $30 billion has been distributed to date, and most of that amount was not authorized until Democrats and an outraged American public pushed through a belated disaster relief bill in June of 2019—just two months ago.

Disasters like Hurricane Maria and Harvey are made more intense by climate change. We need faster and more efficient responses to natural disasters, but we also need to address the stark reality of the Climate Emergency.

The Climate Emergency is fueling hurricanes, floods, droughts, and wildfires all over the planet. We need concerted action, and that requires political leadership with vision, wisdom, and courage to mobilize Americans and the international community.

Please support PDA’s efforts to hold elected officials accountable and elect progressive champions who will push forward to combat the climate crisis. Your gift today of $100, $50, $20.20, or $10 helps us help all of us.

P.S. Invest in progress with a generous donation right now. Signing up to make an automatic monthly donation would help most, and we gratefully welcome any donation. Money tight? Then join the PDA Phone Team making easy, effective calls from your own home with Mike “Phone Guy” Fox.
