Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is leading the struggle to Stop Global Warming, and has since our founding in 2004. Please click here to volunteer for our Climate Emergency Action Team. Having survived Hurricane Andrew, I can promise you that the situation is far worse than we’re hearing for those unfortunate souls caught up in this unprecedented storm. Sadly, the rather smug Republicans acting as though they have things under control are in for a horrible, rude awakening.
Think about your own experience with minor flooding or even a leaky roof or other water damage. Then multiply that by 100 times for each flooded person in each flooded home and then multiply that by tens of thousands. After Hurricane Andrew, it was weeks before we had electricity. That meant no refrigeration, no lights, no air conditioning, and no hot water. The nights were so quiet with no electricity—except for the sounds of critters (raccoons, lizards, cats, dogs, rats, and all manner of Miami wildlife) fighting near the overflowing trash receptacles in the sweltering August heat.

We had to cope by trying to keep food in coolers, and cooking only on the grills. Sweating and showering at the same time. Feeling sick after eating in a reopened restaurant only to learn in the next day’s paper that some restaurants had been found using meat that thawed and then was refrozen—and the people were suffering from food borne illness. And that wasn’t close to the worst of it.
Oh, the trauma that is yet to come when missing people are found dead and still others are never found. Compounding those traumas heaped upon fear and deprivation, soon the insurance companies will start ripping off their policy holders to avoid huge payouts. “Wind damage?” No, they will deny claims saying that damage is from flooding and you do not have that coverage. There is so much more to come that the local and state government and our economy cannot handle. This is an epic storm.
The magnitude of this disaster, the human loss, the economic damage, and the absolute shift of millions of lives into before-Harvey and after-Harvey memories will change the fabric of this nation. Nature is speaking. And even Donald Trump cannot outdo that insistent voice. Nature is speaking. We ignore her at our peril.
