Progressives need to get really, really serious. Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) needs your help now to show that hate will not win. We were recently stunned by the horrible news out of Charlottesville, Virginia. We asked you join with us in declaring that white supremacists would not intimidate us by supporting the Justice Is Not For Sale Act. We helped lead visits to Congressional offices to gain support for that legislation and the rest of the People’s Platform. We need your help now to help elect strong progressives to Congress.

We Need A Progressive Congress

We’ve been busy organizing on issues you care about. We drafted and promoted a petition demanding that Trump not pardon disgraced former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio. Of course Trump chose to honor racism and abuse of innocents by pardoning Arpaio. Undaunted, we launched an Action Alert helping you tell your Senators and Representative to cosponsor the Dream Act. We’ve also asked you to support National Nurses United’s relief efforts to help the victims of Harvey, just the latest 1,000 year storm fed by our addiction to fossil fuels.

Now, we’re asking you to commit to sustaining us in our ongoing work for peace, justice, and progress by signing up to make monthly donations. We must push back strongly against the alt-right, white supremacists, the Trump-supporting climate deniers, and the rest of the right wingers. To do that, we must find, recruit, and elect courageous progressives to the House and Senate next year. That requires resources. We don’t demand dues. We rely on donations from concerned progressives like you.

We know that you get bombarded by requests for money. PDA is different from any other organization. Anyone can call themselves anything, but unless they actually accomplish the things they set out to do, it doesn’t matter that much what they say. We need 100 new sustainers every month to build the organization necessary to achieve progress. You’ll barely notice $20.18 (or other amount) per month, but that regular contribution will make a huge difference! PDA doesn’t just call ourselves progressive. We prove it every day. We were founded just over 13 years ago to fill a specific void: to serve as an effective progressive organization willing and able to bridge the gap between civil rights, peace, justice, environmental, and other activist organizations and the progressive elements within the Democratic Party. We connect our allies in the grassroots with members of Congress who can sponsor legislation. We’ve done that on a wide array of issues. Please step up now to become a “sustainer.”

Your sustainer donation will help us recruit and elect Progressive candidates. That’s something we’ve excelled at. While many organizations eventually endorsed Bernie Sanders for president, PDA was the very first. In fact, our Run Bernie Run campaign was instrumental in making the campaign happen in the first place. Without PDA, it’s very likely that Bernie would never have run for president. We did that together, and together, we changed the course of politics in our nation. With your “sustainer” support, we can make even more progress by electing more progressives to Congress next year. PDA believes you stand up for what’s right, even when that’s not easy. When some organizations stood by silently, PDA stood by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as establishment types attacked her for her outspoken positions against the Saudi weapons sales, regime change, and arming terrorists. We work by her side proudly on these issues, and we persuaded our allies to adopt Tulsi’s climate bill in the People’s Platform. That brings up another important PDA difference: We don’t have a huge budget or expense accounts. We work tirelessly and cost-efficiently to make real progress. We help elect up and coming leaders to Congress, and then we work with them on legislation you support. We don’t just express our positions on the issues. PDA takes your views into the halls of Congress and to members of Congress in their home offices. We bring new cosponsors onto the most progressive legislation, and we work to block bad policies proposed by Republicans and corporate Democrats alike. We’re not apologists for the Democratic Party. We were founded to pull the party into a progressive trajectory. We’ve accomplished a lot, but we need your help to continue this difficult job. It’s one thing when DemExiters and other non-Democrats try to push the Democratic Party toward progressive positions. It’s quite another when PDA does it, because our DemEnter strategy offers effective and powerful leverage from the inside. While others make valid criticisms from the sidelines, we’ve successfully run and won campaigns to reform the Democratic Party from within.

We also use direct pressure. We worked within the Summer for Progress coalition gathering signatures, then marched alongside Nina Turner when she took your progressive case right to the DNC. I personally walked with her and supported her every step of the way in D.C. a few weeks back, and I helped carry and deliver the 125,000 plus petition signatures. If you want to push American politics into a progressive direction, please understand that we’re struggling against billionaires and super PACs with virtually unlimited money. We’ll never match their expenditures, but luckily we don’t have to. Still, we need your support now.
