Kwanzaa 2025: Community over Division

Kwanzaa is a relatively modern cultural celebration created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, in 1966.  Kwanzaa is a way to bring African Americans together as a community and help them reconnect with their African roots and heritage. It consists of seven core principles celebrated on seven days from December 26 to January 1. Each night during Kwanzaa, a candle is lit to reflect one of the Seven Principles: Unity (Umona), Determination (Kujichagulia), Collective Work and Responsibility (Ujima), Cooperative Economics (Ujamaa), Purpose (Nia), Creativity (Kuumba), and Faith (Imani). Symbols like candles and flags used during Kwanzaa represent important African cultural values and unity.

Based on African harvest festivals, Kwanzaa stretches across generations from ancestors to children of the future, and across continents from African lifeways to resilient cultures throughout the African diaspora.

As the current administration attempts to erase Black history and suppress human rights, it is more important than ever to rejoice in cultural ties, embrace community, and rededicate ourselves to the defense of our fellow Americans. We are not silent; we are not intimidated by the resurgence of fascism and bitter racism. We stand together, uplifting decency, democracy, and the true promise of America.

Happy Kwanzaa to all!
