Debra Schrishuhn for the PDA National Team
We only thought it was finished. After the 2021 omnibus appropriations bill and the latest COVID-19 relief package—both many months late—finally passed both Houses of Congress with overwhelming margins, we thought help was on the way, and just in the nick of time.
Not so fast, it turns out. Donald Trump is refusing to sign the bill even as millions of Americans face hunger, eviction, and unbearable healthcare costs, and cities and states face budget shortfalls that threaten essential services. Moreover, a government shutdown is possible this week unless Congress and the President act to pass critical legislation.
What is the Donald doing? Oh, he went to Mar-a-Lago Wednesday after pardoning dozens of corrupt cronies and murderers and fraudsters, played a round of golf Christmas Eve Day, and played another round Christmas Day with faithful toady Sen. Lindsay Graham. He continues to tweet out nonsense about overturning the settled results of the November election in which he lost decisively.
Enough already! The new Congress will convene with the prospect of more electoral theatrics, inadequate relief for suffering Americans, and the real possibility of a government shutdown. PDA continues to take a long view of governance policy, and we need steady resources to implement and expand our efforts on Capitol Hill and throughout the nation. Will you help sustain PDA with a monthly gift of $46, $20.21, $10, or $5? We depend on your support as we work for all of us.
