A few days ago, as the nation mourned and honored legendary Civil and Voting Rights activist Rep. John Lewis, Trump tweeted:
“With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and several legal scholars across the political spectrum identified this as an opening salvo intended to disrupt or even dismantle our democracy. This is nothing new.
From the very first, Trump and his Trumpublican enablers have undermined our most basic political institutions. The trend is terrifying and growing as right-wing extremists in Congress, in traditional and social media, and in armed mobs—both with and without badges—are on the march.
As deaths and job loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic spike—exacerbated by the folly of ideologues—the Trumpublican Senate blocks desperately needed action. We must rebuke Trump’s tyrannical threat to our way of life. The best way to do that is to flip the Senate and elect courageous, committed progressive champions to Congress.
The unconstitutional assaults by secret police against demonstrators in Portland portends a violent crackdown on Americans trying to exercise our most basic rights—likely including our right to vote.
Trump’s partisans are losing in the polls, but they won’t go quietly. We are in their crosshairs. Sadly, too many “centrists” refuse to rise up against these horrendous abuses. Only empowered, resolute progressives stand against the rising tide of Neo-Fascism.
We must organize and act now to repudiate and reverse decades-long right-wing trends. Once we’ve elected champions, we must help them lead exhaustive investigations and punishment of criminals who’ve defrauded taxpayers, abused the public trust, and violated our laws in ways that have harmed and even killed countless people.
As our staffer Debra Schrishuhn wrote last month: “Since our founding in 2004, PDA has fought against misuse of the U.S. military by trying to end wars and occupations. Trump’s misappropriation of military funds, desecration of graves for border wall construction, and denial of basic services and citizenship to immigrant veterans constitutes blatant disrespect for the most basic common decency.”
If anything, Trump and his thoughtless, heartless extremists have only increased their vindictiveness and caused even more destruction over the past weeks.
