On this Independence Day, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) calls for another Declaration of Independence. We demand a truly inclusive and long-overdue update to that venerable document. America must issue a reimagined declaration to make real the promise that all people are created equal. This, because our nation and society continues to fall woefully short of our stated ideals.

In 1852, formerly-enslaved person Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration at which he explained:

I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common.

The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me.

This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn…”

Frederick Douglass, abolitionist, orator, and visionary statesperson.

Those words still ring true, sadly. People of Color—as well as women, LGBTQIA+ people, immigrants, and others—still face de jure and de facto inequality, bigotry, and violence at the hands of police and other government officials. Our system, our entire society perpetuates oppression.

That said, racism remains America’s “Original Sin,” a bloody stain that taints today’s observances. We must recommit ourselves to make the Fourth of July a celebration of freedom for all, one that includes every one of us. We have so far to go, but we can begin by making progress starting right now.
