On July 2, 1964, Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson signed the historic Civil Rights Act into law. It vastly expanded the human rights of Americans, outlawing discrimination based on race, skin color, religion, national origin, or sex. This monumental change was the result of decades of concerted citizen action and public pressure.
Now, sixty-one years later, these fundamental rights are under attack by a lawless President, a compliant Congress, and a reactionary super-majority on the Supreme Court.
It is imperative that we not idly stand by while our democratic republic is dismantled by unconstitutional Executive Orders, deficit-increasing spending bills enriching the 1% while shredding social safety nets, and (in too many cases) a rubber-stamp judiciary. Our voices must be heard in the halls of Congress, on the streets of the neighborhoods, on the phones, and online. Now. All together. Everywhere all at once.
