By Opposing Sen. Manchin’s “Side Deal,” Progressive Democrats Make a Stand for the Environment and Frontline Communities
Alan Minsky for the PDA National Team
Unlike “Moderates” and Republicans, Progressive Democrats respect the scientific reality of the climate emergency, and care for people in frontline communities. Have no Illusions: if humanity is going to survive the 21st century, we need to build a progressive political majority:

The battle over Joe Manchin’s Dirty Side Deal proves once again that progressive Democrats are true climate champions, unwilling to sacrifice the global environment and frontline communities for political expediency.
Over the past two weeks, PDA has joined with our environmental justice allies in doing whatever we can to alert the country and Congress that Sen. Manchin’s deal will leave frontline communities even more vulnerable to the damage done by extractive industries. It will hand the fossil fuel industry one of its most coveted victories by limiting the scope and influence of environmental impact studies for new industrial-scale projects. In other words, at the very time when we need to cease all new fossil fuel projects, we will, in fact, be expediting them.
Tragically, Democratic leadership, including the White House, has supported Sen. Manchin’s proposal. Making matters worse, they have yet to release the language of the actual bill (all that we’ve seen is a leaked draft of the legislation, which is consistent with what Sen. Manchin and his allies have described).
Fortunately, progressives in Congress, led by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Raul Grijalva, have spoken out vociferously. Please contact your Representatives and Senators to support their efforts to block this bill. In particular, they should block leadership’s attempts to attach this side deal to legislation that must pass or the government will shut down for lack of funding.
Just as importantly, support PDA by becoming a sustaining member today. Why is that essential? If the U.S.federal government, the most powerful and influential institution in the world, is going to be serious about combating the climate emergency, progressive Democrats are going to have to start winning a lot more elections, so that progressives become the dominant force inside a Democratic Party with a majority in Congress and a progressive in the White House.
That may sound like a long shot, but it’s pretty much a necessity if humanity is going to survive the 21st century. It’s also what PDA is all about 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—building a progressive movement “for the people and the planet” into a national majority!
