Being undocumented should not be a death sentence
Dan O’Neal and Debra Schrishuhn for Alan, Mike F, Janis, Mike H, Donna, Dr Bill, Kimberly, and Bryan—your PDA National Team
Being undocumented should not be a death sentence. Please join Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) demanding that Congress defund and abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and act to close down all immigrant detention facilities as quickly as possible before more detainees die from the coronavirus.
Barbaric conditions inside ICE detention camps (many of which are for-profit and unregulated) include overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and lack of personal protective equipment for workers and detainees alike.
The Administration’s reckless, abusive actions make further deadly spread of COVID-19 a certainty. These conditions are exacerbated by deliberate misinformation ICE and other officials have spread—both inside and outside the detention camps.
Approximately 34,000 people are being held by ICE across the U.S. Of these, over 6,000 are approved asylum-seekers. The first coronavirus case involving an immigration detainee was reported by ICE on March 30 in New Jersey.
As of April 16, ICE admitted that there were about 90 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among ICE detainees, and more than 20 cases among detention center employees. Unless ICE frees these unjustly detained people, many more will die!
Erika Andiola, a DREAMer and human rights activist with the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), recently posted on Twitter:
“People can’t physically distance in prison. If they do, they are placed in solitary confinement, which is incredibly traumatizing. Their medical ‘care’ is crap. We demand ICE to #FreeThemAll. COVID-19 knows no border, and it’s not contained by cages.”
Under combined pressure from lawsuits, public outcry, and detainee protests, ICE is finally beginning to release hundreds of asylum seekers and undocumented detainees.
We cannot let the Administration neglect and endanger this vulnerable population. Tell Congress to end this inhumane and needlessly dangerous situation. Help PDA stand up for immigrants today, and in the coming elections.
