Looking Back, Leaning Forward

As many have noted, the observance of Passover, Good Friday/Easter, and Ramadan coincide this Spring for the first time since 1991, itself a tumultuous year. These major holidays are a time for reflection, renewal, and recommitment. For the faithful, they represent the emotional core of each religion, transforming the past into lessons for the present and the future.

We took a few moments this morning to consider 1991. The U.S. had led a coalition of Arab and European nations in Operation Desert Storm, countering the aggression of Iraq on its neighbor Kuwait. The U.S. under George H.W. Bush and the Soviet Union, led by Mikhail Gorbachev, signed the START I Treaty in July, limiting both countries’ stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Canada and the U.S. agreed to address the problems of transboundary air pollution, mandating reduction of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in both countries. Ten Soviet republics, including Ukraine, declared independence, and by the end of 1991, the Soviet Union ceased to exist and the Warsaw Pact ended. The Balkan War started with the breakup of Yugoslavia. South Africa officially dismantled apartheid, and Los Angeles police were caught on tape beating Rodney King.

There were great upheavals in the world order throughout 1991, great opportunities for moving toward cooperation for the greater good, and brutal expressions of humanity’s worst tendencies.

In 2022, we stand at another set of domestic and international crossroads. Our actions today and in the coming months will determine the direction of democracy and authoritarianism as forms of government, wide-ranging effects of man-made climate change, and the balance of power between the state and vulnerable populations. We have our work cut out for us.

Progressive Democrats of America works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 52 weeks a year to effect positive, progressive change in the U.S. and around the world. If you agree with our goals and our work ethic, please contribute what you can afford monthly toward our efforts.
