One of the most inspirational volunteers we have here at PDA is Erika, in Arizona.
She regularly nails multiple phone shifts per week. She attends our meetings, and actively promotes our campaigns on social media.
And she does it all from a wheelchair.
I find it difficult to put into words just how much this humbles me and puts wind in my sails, at the same time.
I asked her a while back if she thought it would be a good idea for us to start an Issue Organizing Team focused on the specific needs of our disabled brothers and sisters. Something driven by the folks who live with the issues day in and day out, and that would help us identify good and bad ideas in legislation.
So, of course, Erika inspired me once again by saying she’d be up for being a part of a group that would take that issue on.
Then, serendipitously an article appeared in Common Dreams, after our Executive Director Alan Minsky and Professor Harvey Kaye proposed a 21st-Century Economic Bill of Rights, that drilled down on the specific needs of the disabled community within this framework.
What a perfect precursor to our first meeting of the team, and we’re glad to say that the author, Dylan Brown, will be joining us!
