The American network of public colleges and universities is unrivalled around the world and has been for more than 150 years. Indeed, when America’s global dominance is analyzed, few highlight this fact. Yet clearly it is as important as any element of our society for generating economic wealth and building the foundation of America’s social cohesion. For the vast majority of those 150 years, public colleges and universities were very affordable. That ended roughly 40 years ago with the rise of Reaganism and economic neo-liberalism – now tuition costs have reached absurd levels. Public colleges and universities seem less about education and more like a debt trap – stranding graduates in a life of debt peonage in what is fast becoming a neo-feudal society. |

Fortunately, progressives are saying enough is enough! There is no reason why universities and colleges should be relatively more expensive today than they were 100 years ago, or 50 years ago. There’s no reason why they can’t cost the same as in Germany, where tuition for everyone is free. Therefore, PDA calls upon all PDA members across the country to contact their Members of Congress in both the U.S. House and Senate and ask them to be original cosponsors of Rep. Pramila Jayapal and Sen. Bernie Sanders’ College for All Act of 2025 that outlines a clear strategy to make all public universities and colleges tuition free or virtually tuition free for all Americans. The deadline for members of Congress to become original cosponsors is this Wednesday. |
