Tell Congress We Need Net Neutrality
Help Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) restore Net Neutrality, an essential freedom for effective advocacy and organizing. The rules being overturned by the Trump administration deny equal access to the Internet. We all recognize free and fair online access is a fundamental right and 21st-century communications tool. It must be guaranteed and protected as a public utility—not subject to the whims or greed of unaccountable monopolies. Under the unfair Trumpian rules, life-saving first responders and other essential services are slowed, while unpopular viewpoints may be frozen out entirely.

So many of the battles PDA takes on stretch across the usual boundaries of a single issue. One such concern is Freedom of the Press as enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
Retired Admiral William McRaven, the commander who directed the mission that killed bin Laden, called on Trump to respect the Constitution and Bill of Rights: “When you undermine the people’s right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the Constitution and all for which it stands.” In an op-ed published in the Washington Post, McRaven warned that Trump has “embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation.”
PDA is working alongside countless organizations and individuals who demand that the Congress act to keep the Internet free by protecting Net Neutrality. The highly respected independent publication Consumer Reports announced that a “survey shows that a majority of Americans favor net neutrality rules that prevent internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking lawful online content.”
Without a free Internet (Net Neutrality), the rights of people in the 21st century to access information and organize effectively are restricted. Without access to information, knowledge and awareness of government activities are limited. Without timely knowledge of the government’s activities, oversight and the ability to “petition the government for a redress of grievances” is curtailed.
Profit-seeking corporations and polluters benefit. Government oversight suffers. Authoritarian overreach and intimidation of our fundamental freedoms thrive.
Freedom of the press—including free and equal Internet access—reaches into every issue we care about: ending corporate rule, providing universal access to quality health care, stopping wars and occupations, fighting climate change, protecting election integrity, passing comprehensive and fair immigration reform, advocating for economic and social justice, curbing gun violence, and demanding equal rights for all people.
The Washington Post proclaims as its motto, “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” Freedom is swallowed by silence. Help PDA shine a light on abuses and speak up for those who need to be heard. Tell Congress to restore Net Neutrality now.
Your monthly donation of $50, $20.20, $10, or $5 gives us the ongoing resources to keep up the fight for Net Neutrality and all of our other priorities. We can only continue our efforts with your support. Please make automatic monthly sustaining gifts or a one-time gift now.
