Stand Up For Women’s Health
During The Summer For Progress

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is proud to stand with our National Advisory Board member Rep. Barbara Lee, the lead sponsor of the Each Woman Act (H.R. 771) which would guarantee equal access to all reproductive care (including abortion) in health insurance for all women. This important legislation is included in the People’s Platform for the Summer for Progress campaign. Click here to see if your representative has already cosponsored the Each Woman Act. Then, if not, call 844-266-4612 and tell him or her to cosponsor Rep. Barbara Lee’s H.R. 771.

Abortion funding and access is never an easy issue to address. All too often, the right wing targets these rights as a way to fire up their supporters and / or restrict abortion rights. Not only is that counterproductive, it is also dangerous for women. This bill deserves our support because it will help save women’s lives. Women’s reproductive healthcare is vital, personal to each woman, and must not to be determined by her ability to pay. Join with us telling Congress to guarantee that each woman has access to a full range of healthcare services—including abortion.

Then help us pressure Congress for Healthcare as a Human Right!

We’ve heard some say Democrats should turn our backs on women’s rights and stop defending women’s access to the full range of healthcare. We strongly disagree. We stand with the more than 120 House Democrats who have already cosponsored the Each Woman Act. This to guarantee that public health programs like Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP—as well as all employer-based insurance plans—will cover equal access and funding for all women’s reproductive health services, including abortion. That is consistent with our long-standing support for a woman’s right to choose, and our support for a Single Payer Expanded and improved Medicare for All system.

Many years ago, when a woman legislator from a conservative leaning state was criticized for the endorsement her campaign received from Emily’s List—a prominent abortion rights organization—she stood firm in her decision of support for abortion funding. Then-Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota said that based on the intensely personal, private issues that the controversy around abortion raises, we ought not to attempt to legislate matters of the heart or those of personal faith—what we must do is to make sure every woman is fully free to make her best decision about her own health and any personal beliefs that may inform her. That is as true today as it was years ago.

This is about equality and access to safe, appropriate abortion care as a part of healthcare services. It is about personal freedom for all women.

In Solidarity,
