Troop Movement, Not Troop Withdrawal

Published by Common Dreams.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) made the following statement on June 30, 2009 regarding the announcement that U.S. troops have left the cities and towns of Iraq and turned over formal security to Iraqi security forces:

The withdrawal of some U.S. combat troops from Iraq’s cities is welcome and long overdue news. However, it is important to remember that this is not the same as a withdrawal of U.S. troops and contractors from Iraq. [more]

An Affordable College Education is Essential to the American Dream

New program starts July 1

After four years of hard work, graduating students walk across the stage, receive their diplomas, and embark on the next stage of their lives. After graduation, these students enter the workforce in the hopes of building a life for themselves.

However, the reality of looming student loan payments adds anxiety to their well deserved excitement. More often than not, starting salaries for recent graduates are too low and they struggle to repay loans. In order to alleviate these problems Congress has passed new laws that will make college more affordable for students and allow them to make more reasonable monthly student loan payments.
Grijalva Bill to Ensure Student Success in Middle School

Legislation to help ensure that all students exiting the middle grades are prepared for success was introduced this week by Congressman Raśl M. Grijalva.

The Success in the Middle Act, would authorize federal investments in improving the education of middle grades students in low-performing schools. The bill would help states and districts provide leadership, intensive intervention, and technical assistance to improve low-performing schools that contain middle grades.

According to ACT, the level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on the students’ college and career readiness upon graduation from high school than anything that happens academically in high school. [more]

Why the Demand to Prosecute Torture Will Grow

Remarks at Torture Accountability Action Day rally in Washington, D.C., June 25, 2009

(Video of this and other speeches on Youtube):

Have you ever held a little baby in your arms? Raise your hand if you have. A toddler is as delicate and precious as a baby, but able to move around and get hurt. Bigger kids can move faster and farther. Our instincts should be to protect them.

I was reading yesterday about a boy who was probably 12 years old when our nation imprisoned him in 2002. We held him in Afghanistan, but I don't mean "held" in the sense in which one lovingly holds a baby. We put a hood on him, stripped him, shackled him and shoved him down stairs. We brought him to Guantanamo, kicked him, beat him, broke his nose, pepper sprayed him, and deprived him of sleep for many days. In 2003 he tried to kill himself by slamming his head against a wall. [more]

What Bush Told Blair Could End the Wars

Published by Let's Try Democracy.
In May 2005 we launched AfterDowningStreet.org to publicize the Downing Street Minutes. By June we'd had great, if fleeting, success. During the following months and years, mountains of new memos and statements emerged on the Iraq War lies, many of them more damaging than the Downing Street documents. But increasingly nobody cared, because evidence of crimes was less interesting once Congress had dropped the pretense that it might take action. The single most powerful, and yet largely ignored, document yet to emerge, might, now in 2009, finally, produce results. And, of course, it is our friends over in England who are, as always, two steps ahead of us. [more]

Ellison Condemns Spate of Hate Crimes; Calls for more Vigilance toward Home Grown Terrorism

"I join with millions of Americans to send my condolences to the loved ones of Stephen T. John, who was murdered on duty yesterday, [June 10,] in the lobby of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. I commend the security officers for their quick response which undoubtedly saved more lives. While the facts are still coming in, I am appalled by reports that the gunman was motivated by racist views against Jews and African Americans.

This is the third high-profile gun crime in the United States in recent weeks fueled by hatred and armed by lax gun laws. The assassination of Doctor George Tiller at his church in Kansas shocked us all about the dangers of extremists who use violence and terror to advance their causes. Then there was the heartbreaking story of the military recruiter randomly murdered in Little Rock by a man who said that he was angry about the killing of Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. Regardless of political views, violent acts of hatred like these are never justifiable. [more]

US Needs New Industrial Policy

Published by Chicago Sun-Times.
'The fight for American manufacturing is the fight for America's future," President Barack Obama declared as he pledged billions to help save and reorganize Chrysler and General Motors. Yet, he also says he doesn't want to manage the car companies.

"The sooner we can get out of that business, the better off we're going to be." But that sentiment--widely praised by editorials across the country--contradicts the commitment needed to revive American manufacturing. [more]

Barbara Lee Applauds Decision to Readmit Cuba to OAS

On Wednesday June 3, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) applauded the Organization of American States (OAS) on their decision to revoke a 1962 measure suspending Cuba, reversing a landmark of the Cold War in the hemisphere. While the action was taken without conditions, the agreement requires Cuba to comply with OAS conventions on human rights and other issues.

“I am very pleased to see that the Organization of American States has taken another positive step toward bringing the Cold War to a final end in the Americas,” said Congresswoman Lee. [more]

Maryland's Donna Edwards: Emerging Leader, Liberal Maverick

State's first black congresswoman opposes Obama war-funding plan

Published by the Baltimore Sun.
When Congress gives President Barack Obama more funds later this month for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, only one Maryland lawmaker is expected to dissent: Democratic Rep. Donna F. Edwards.

Edwards believes the president is taking the U.S. in the wrong direction in Afghanistan. She argues that Obama has no plan for winning and no strategy for getting out. [more]

Ellison Introduces Financial Regulatory Reform Legislation: Closes Risky Asset Loophole

Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minneapolis) introduced important legislation today in anticipation of upcoming Congressional action on financial regulatory reform. The Regulatory Capital Enhancement Act addresses a glaring loophole in existing banking rules.

Under current federal regulations, banks are required to maintain a minimum level of capital based upon the riskiness of the assets that they hold. However, a number of financial institutions have been able to avoid these requirements by creating and using off-balance-sheet vehicles, such as special purpose entities (SPEs), to warehouse risky assets. The Regulatory Capital Enhancement Act would address this problem by requiring federal banking regulators to issue rules that treat assets held in SPEs in a way that is equivalent with those held on bank’s balance sheets.
There Is No Taliban

Published by Kabul Jouney Blogspot.
KABUL-- It's an extraordinary statement, but people here believe it's true. That's not to say men aren't fighting for the Taliban, they are. But it's not because they are Taliban.

An illustration is best. Take Dani, not his real name, a man of about 40, with a wide smile and an engaging manner full of warmth and kindness. Before the Taliban, he was with the Mujihadeen, as a young commander fighting against the Soviets. When the Taliban came in, he was a top Taliban commander. Now that the the Taliban has fallen, he is with the Afghan National Army. Afghan Army pay is $150 per month, or about $7 a day. Where the job is, that's where he'll go. He doesn't care much about politics. But he's the only breadwinner for his family in a place where family, extended family, is everything. Your cousin is like your brother. If he dies, you can no longer watch his children starve than you can your own. [more]

The Latest...

We are now drawing near the final hour of my legal battles.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has denied my request for a re-hearing of our arguments which could have led to overturning my politically motivated prosecutions.

Meanwhile, the Bush-appointed U.S. Attorney and her henchmen, still in power in Alabama, are seeking an additional 20 in my re-sentencing. This is after the court absolved me of two charges. And all this because I re-appointed a contributor to a board he had served on under three previous Governors, and for which I did not profit a single penny. [more]
