Turning Orange County Blue
Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), the Orange County Labor Council, and the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee are joining together to mobilize voters in Orange County, CA--one of the most Republican areas in the country. PDA-endorsed, Healthcare NOT Warfare Candidate
Debbie Cook is making a surprisingly strong challenge against long-term Republican incumbent
Dana Rohrabacher in California's 46th District. Recent polling reveals this is one of the closest Congressional contests in the U.S. PDA launched the Healthcare NOT Warfare campaign last January to focus progressive activism on these key issues.
Sunday, November 2nd at 11:30 a.m., PDA and allies will hold a "Progressive Unity/GOTV/Countdown to Victory Rally" at the Machinist Union District Lodge 725, 5402 Bolsa Ave. in Huntington Beach featuring mayor Debbie Cook; Teamsters Secretary-Treasurer,
Patrick D. Kelly (Local 952); PDA's Healthcare NOT Warfare National Campaign Co-Chair,
Norman Solomon;
Michael Lighty of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee;
David Clennon, Actor/Activist (
Syrianna and
thirtysomething); and PDA Executive Director,
Tim Carpenter. Volunteers will canvass in the area after the rally.
Tim Carpenter said, "PDA endorsed Debbie Cook in the heat of the summer last July, and she is turning up the heat on global-warming denier Dana Rohrabacher. Cook is a leader on issues important to Orange County. Rohrabacher represents the divisive, short-sighted, highly ideological politics of the past--immigrant bashing and other tired old rhetoric. He blindly supported the failed Bush/Cheney policies. Voters in Orange County deserve better. They want change, and they're supporting Debbie Cook."
Carpenter continued, "We're proud of Debbie Cook. She took it to her opponent in the debate at Orange Coast College Tuesday afternoon. We helped lift her from a long shot--because of the Republican registration advantage and Rohrabacher's big money backing--to highly competitive. We were on the ground working for her early, and now we're seeing other organizations putting her on their radar. We're excited about mobilizing progressive voters in my home town. We can tell we're having a big impact here."
PDA Communications Director
Laura Bonham said, "Orange County is suddenly teaming with progressives due to tireless voter registration and mobilization efforts. Debbie Cook is poised to defeat an eight-term incumbent because of hard work and because her opponent is out of touch on the issues. Rohrabacher claims people have nothing to do with global warming and insists we do nothing about this crisis. Debbie Cook led Huntington Beach in supporting the U.S. Mayors' Agreement on Global Warming. She's also a leader on healthcare. She knows we need the healthcare system we're already paying for but not getting--a cost-efficient, patient-centered, privately-administered, publicly-funded system that covers all Americans, as proposed by Rep. John Conyers."
PDA is also supporting candidate
Steve Young (CA-48). For more information on PDA-endorsed candidates and other PDA efforts,
